The project DQ. was conceived by José Luis Turina, Justo Navarro and La Fura dels Baus, realised by Juan Ángel Vela del Campo and therefore its birth was the product of an absolute creative synchronization that took precedence over individual personality or star power. This gives DQ. some very special characteristics, especially considering that the normal process for creating a new opera almost always starts with a score, which requires a libretto and eventually demands a staging.

DQ. was even further enriched by the intervention of Enric Miralles and Benedetta Tagliabue, who designed the scenography with the collaboration of Roland Olbeter; with video created by Emmanuel Carlier, costumes by Chu Uroz and musical direction by Josep Pons. The work is based on the mythic character Don Quixote and recreates a series of situations that break with the conventions of space and time.
The three acts are linked to three different spaces and two different moments in time. The first and second acts take place, respectively, in Geneva –in a virtual auction house connected to a time machine- and in a monster-themed amusement park located high in a Hong Kong skyscraper in the 31st century. The third act takes place in an academic conference about Don Quixote and his centenary, celebrated in Barcelona in 2005. This apparently absurd circumstance is the backdrop for a reflection on one of the key figures in the history of literature, probably the one who was most ahead of his time and symbolised some of the values of future modernity. Don Quixote, who was derided by his contemporaries, embodies imagination to the fullest, as well as honour, respect for the weak and the confrontation with absolute power: a monster. As the monster he is (in the first act of DQ.) a rarity –a piece prized by collectors– and later as a mythic object of study.
